KRCG/Dish Duel: KRCG Pulls Out Its Guns

The feud between KRCG and Dish Network is heating up. Recently, the satellite company began calling KRCG's move greedy and telling its subscribers that they (KRCG) didn't listen to its viewers. It cited the recent firing of Sports Director Rod Smith as one of those examples. Protestors were reported outside of KRCG's Columbia bureau in recent days, too. Dish seemed to really be zinging the station.

Now, however, Rod Smith is back with the station and KRCG is using its two biggest weapons in the fight with the satellite company in order to gain some leverage. KRCG is airing two clips: one by recently retired station icon Lee Gordon and another by recently rehired Rod Smith. Both encourage KRCG viewers to not put up with the nasty tactics it claims Dish is involved in and to head to http://www.krcg.com/ and find out alternative ways to watch their programming.

What a duel this has become.

It seems to me that KRCG - which is accusing Dish of corporate ambivalence to viewers, is little more than the pot calling the kettle black considering that many citizens in the viewing audience they claim to be fighting for have jobs pivoted around Dish Network in some way - be it retail, installation, service, and so on. How many businesses in the affected area sell Dish Network? I want to know why, if Dish is offering so little, Fox, ABC and NBC seem perfectly content with their compensation. Not to mention that KRCG's smear campaign is bordering on the ridiculous, if not slanderous, and it all seems very immature for a station that recently came under heat for firing Rod Smith. Raising their share would mean higher prices for Dish viewers, and with the economy as it I don't think that anyone is really feeling too sympathetic for KRCG's demands. Perhaps Dish should give them what they want, raise prices, and then sit back and see how many KRCG viewers think their station is worth an extra 1 or 2 dollars a month - charges not incited by Dish but demanded by the Broadcasting network itself.

I have been, like many others, a long-time viewer of KRCG and patron of its advertising customers.
After several complaints to DISH-NETWORK and reviewing the facts of this attempt to increase profits of your station.
I am convinced the problem with this negotiation is with KRCG wanting more than other affiliates, including other CBS affiliates
that are agreeable to the terms offered for rebroadcast rights. While this little “Power Play” continues, the viewers and local advertisers are the ones that suffer. Ultimately KRCG will not only lose their viewers and advertisers, but somewhere down the line the people of Mid-Missouri will be paying more. I would think something like this could severely impact a person’s job retention possibilities!!!
Good Luck,
